The Cox Wing at Cap and Gown opened officially on Reunions weekend with a big post-P-rade celebration. The club was packed, and it was great to see how all of the new and old spaces blend together into a truly exceptional social/dining club for today’s students and our alumni gatherings.

It’s stunning to see this beautiful new space. It’s much bigger than we imagined, and a dramatic final “Cap”stone addition for the club. There is a lovely gas fireplace named for the Class of 1992 that features a Cap and Gown quote that has summed to the feelings of members for many decades by Herman Heydt Jr., Class of 1929, “Whenever I enter this club, I feel happy inside.”

It was great that our undergrad members were the first to be able to use the Cox Wing for Housparties weekend. The Cap and Gown Board of Trustees held a reception in the new space before the May board meeting. Alumni got their first look at the Cox Wing on Saturday of Reunions, and everyone loved the new space with glass doors open on all sides to let in the breeze and a wonderful buffet prepared by the Cap Staff. We heard there was a lot of “buzz” up and down the Street about this amazing new space at Cap.

There are so many people to thank for the success of this latest, and final, “Cap”stone project. We had an opportunity to thank many of our supporter and donors in person at the Grand Opening.

Howard Cox '64 made the most generous gift for the Cox Wing. The South Pavilion is named for the Class of 1965. The North Pavilion is named the REG Room for Burke Ross ‘73, Tom Edelman ‘73, and Ben Guill ‘73. The fireplace is named for the Class of 1992. The North Terrace is named for Preston Haskell ‘60.

At the Grand Opening ceremony we heard from many Cap members on the significance and building of this new space. When we announced that we had $200,000 more to raise, an anonymous donor from the Class of 1979 stepped up on the spot to take us over our goal of $1.2 million. The Central Pavilion of the Cox Wing will be unveiled at a special ceremony this fall!

This is the last opportunity for the foreseeable future to have your name or your section year engraved at Cap for all time, and there are still naming opportunities available. We will be continuing the campaign until the fall when we’ll have a Dedication Ceremony to “cap” off our success and celebrate.
