Spring has arrived in Princeton and the new Cox Wing at Cap and Gown is on time for our Grand Opening on June 1st, Saturday of Reunions.

It’s stunning to see this beautiful new space take shape. It’s much bigger than we imagined, and a dramatic final “Cap”stone addition for the club. There is a lovely gas fireplace named for the Class of 1992 that features a Cap and Gown quote that has summed to the feelings of members for many decades by Herman Heydt Jr., Class of 1929, “Whenever I enter this club, I feel happy inside.”

Our undergrad members were able to use the Cox Wing during Housparties and the Cap and Gown Board of Trustees held a reception in the new space before the May board meeting. Students and alumni are all overwhelmed with the beauty of the addition and can’t wait for the Grand Opening on June 1st when all the finishing details will be completed and we’ll be able to show it off to the hundreds of Cap alums who return for Reunions.

We need the support of more alumni to help us raise the money for this project so the club will remain debt free.  Please join the alumni who have already contributed generously to this project.

We thank the following alumni, for their exceptional generosity and hope many more of you will join this illustrious group. Our undergraduate members call Cap, "The Illustrious!"

Howard Cox '64 has made a most generous gift and this beautiful new addition will be called the Cox Wing. The South Pavilion will be named for the Class of 1965. The North Pavilion will be named the REG Room for Burke Ross ‘73, Tom Edelman ‘73, and Ben Guill ‘73. The fireplace will be named for the Class of 1992. The North Terrace will be named for Preston Haskell ‘60.

There are naming opportunities at many levels, and this is the last opportunity for the foreseeable future to have your name or your section year engraved at Cap for all time. We are adding bricks to the Connect-to-Cap Walkway. Do you have your personal brick in the walkway? Check out all the naming opportunities.

Cap President Jade Williams '18 Meets Cap Alum Norman Carter '38 at his 80th Reunion

IMG_1090.jpg

80 years separates the years Norman Carter '38 and Cap President Jade Williams '18 graduated from Princeton, but they came together to meet and talk because Cap and Gown keeps our members connected over decades of Princeton and Cap history.

Norm Carter read the article we wrote about him and his room-mate and club-mate Bill Coors '38 in the Cap Spring Newsletter.  He also read about our Cap President Jade Williams who was recently profiled in the Princeton Alumni Weekly.  So when Norm was returning to Princeton for his 80th Reunion, he asked, Lisa Schmucki '74, the editor of the newsletter, if he could meet her.  Lisa and Jade met up with Norm and his family at the Old Guard Luncheon.

Here are Jade's recollections of this historic meeting:

"As I prepared myself for my first P-rade as a graduating senior, I was especially excited for one early activity of the day which was the great opportunity to meet Norm Carter ’38, one of the oldest alumni on campus and in Cap! After emailing back and forth with his son Thomas Carter
’66, also a Cap alum, I was able to meet Norm in Forbes, accompanied by Lisa Schmucki.

After Tom made all of the introductions, I was amazed to see Norm’s eyes light up in recognition since Tom had told me he had wanted to meet me since reading about me in the Cap newsletter. In addition to asking me questions about Cap and Gown today, as well as my studies and post-graduation plans, I was able to hear a little more from him and his own experience at Princeton. He told me he has attended almost every Princeton Reunions, and during his 70th Reunion, Tom and Norm told a hilarious story where a student offered Bill Coors, Norm’s former roommate, a Bud Light which Bill immediately sent back.

Norm has not been able to see the inside of the club with the new additions but he has been able to come back to Cap a few times and he says the club looks great from the outside! I told him the newest addition, the Cox Wing, will look even better once completed and hopefully we can get him to the club to see it! I am extremely honored to have met him and I hope that I get to see him next year for my first Reunions! I am extremely thankful to Tom and Lisa for their introduction and it was great to see Norm surrounded by so many family and friends."

Princeton Eating Clubs Book

PPF Book Cover.jpg

The Princeton Prospect Foundation announces the publication of a beautiful new book, The Princeton Eating Clubs, by Clifford W. Zink.

The majestic Eating Clubs lining Prospect Avenue have been the center of Princeton University’s undergraduate social life since the late 19th century, and they continue to provide homes away from home for tens of thousands of alumni returning to campus for events and Reunions. Now, for the first time, the origins, evolution, and architectural grandeur of the Princeton Eating Clubs are described in a captivating manner with delightful archival images and current photographs.

Researched and created by award-winning, Princeton-based author and historic preservation consultant Clifford W. Zink, The Princeton Eating Clubs portrays the eleven extant private Eating Clubs plus five former clubhouses now operated by the University for academic purposes.

The full-color, hardcover book is 12 in. by 10 in. with 192 pages and over 500 illustrations. The book is $60 and available at Labyrinth Books in Princeton. You can also order it on Amazon.com.

On Friday, June 2nd Cap hosted its 5th Annual Reunions Cocktail Party for the women of The Cap and Gown Club under glorious blue skies. Women from the Classes of 1972 through to 2017 were invited to the event which was exceptionally well attended. As in previous years, the roof deck was the scene of the festivities and Cap women donning their beer jackets and major reunions costumes mingled over rosé and canapés.

This tradition, hosted every year on the Friday afternoon of reunions, is a lovely opportunity for two generations of Cap women to re-connect, share old memories and create new ones.

More than a few mentors and mentees were reunited on the roof deck – women who’d forged professional bonds far away from Princeton but for whom those bonds stemmed from the shared memories of their old Eating Club, for instance Serena Dayal ’07 and Lucy Lee ’14.

Paulita Mejia ’18 and Annie Hadley ’18

Paulita Mejia ’18 and Annie Hadley ’18

The class of 1987 (celebrating their thirtieth reunion with the theme “True Colors: Orange and Black”), the class of 1992 (celebrating their twenty-fifth with the theme “Orange and Black to the Future”) and the class of 2007 (celebrating their tenth reunion with the theme “Wet Hot Princeton Summer”) were especially well represented although women from many more alumni classes along with their families enjoyed the festivities in the sunshine.

For current Cap Social Chair, Annie Hadley ’18, and Athletics Chair, Paulita Lara Mejia ’18, it was their first time at the event as they represented the undergraduate officers.

Meanwhile the “Great Marinara Sauce Spillage of 2017” an incident whose name is self-explanatory, left certain members of the wonderful Class of ’92 doused in red sauce albeit in fits of laughter. Certainly hilarious new memories of Cap to add to the stacks of old ones!

We look forward to continuing this tradition and to welcoming many more Cap women back to the club during Reunions 2018 (May 31 – June 3, 2018). Ladies of Cap – mark it in your calendars!
